You don’t have to have a green thumb to recognize them. It seems like anyone can grow them. They seem to come out of nowhere…weeds.

Yes, weeds are the nemesis for many a gardener, beginner or expert.

But did you know that weeds actually serve a purpose?

Think for a minute. Where in nature do you see bare ground? It doesn’t occur naturally. Typically bare ground is the result of some type of man made disturbance or ecological disaster such as fire or flood.

Weeds serve the purpose of healing and restoring the soil bed. They grow quickly, spread efficiently, and provide a base of nutrients for larger plants to grow on.

So while weeds do serve a purpose, they are not always welcome especially in our vegetable or flower gardens.
One way to prevent weed growth is to keep your beds covered – thus preventing the need for weeds to come in and restore the space. This can be done in a variety of ways – landscape fabric, heavy mulch, straw or other organic material. If you keep the soil covered you will go a long way in preventing weed growth.
