Understanding what type of soil you have is an important part of planning a healthy and productive landscape plan for your property.

Types of Soil

Sandy Soil
Sandy soil is very light and easy to dig in. This is especially beneficial when planting new flowers or trees. Sandy soil is made up of larger particles that makes it difficult to hold on to moisture or nutrients. This means it often requires additives such as organic material, fertilizer and manure to keep it healthy and plant supportive.

Clay Soil
Clay soil is extremely dense and heavy. It can be difficult to plant shrubs or trees in it. It does hold on to moisture and nutrients better but may not drain well when hard and dry. It will require organic matter as an additive to help with drainage and give space for plants to grow and move.

Silt Soil
Silt soil is made up of medium size particles which makes it easier to work with although it can become hard like clay when wet. It drains well and holds on to nutrients so it does not require the same amount of additives as the other two types.

So how do you know which type of soil you have? Do a quick soil test. Take a small handful and see if you can roll it into a ball. If you can, that means the soil is either clay or silt. If you can then roll the ball into a long hotdog shape it means the soil is clay. If you can’t it is silt. Soil that can’t be rolled at all is sandy soil.

The experts at Gregory Landscape Services can help you determine what types of soil you have and what types of plants are best suited to that type of soil.
