What are the benefits to gardening in the Fall?
– Fewer bugs and diseases to contend with
– Weeds don\u2019t grow as quickly
– A new variety of plants to choose from
So what do you do about the existing plants in your garden?
The first step is to pull and remove any plants that have stopped producing in order to make room for your new crops. These can be added to your compost pile if you have one to create mulch for the following summer garden. Make sure that the plants you add to your compost pile don\u2019t show any signs of disease, if they do take them to the regular trash.
After removing the plants and pulling any weeds it\u2019s time to decide on your next step. If you aren\u2019t going to plant anything for the fall, consider a cover crop which will add nutrients back into the soil and make it healthier for next year. After a busy growing season the soil needs to be replenished before feeding the same summer crops again. Examples of cover crops include legumes like hairy vetch and caley pea.
If you are going to plant your Fall garden choose from cool weather crops like beans, lettuce, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and spinach. Keep them well watered to get through the last of the summer heat. With a little time and cooler temperatures you\u2019ll be enjoying a harvest right up until the frost settles in.
