Over the course of a year organic material such as grass clippings, leaves or other debris can create a layer known as \u201cthatch\u201d on the top of your soil. This thatch can prevent moisture, sunlight and nutrients from getting through to your grass.
Aeration – a process of perforating the soil with small holes, can help to improve your soil health by loosening compaction and allowing nutrients and oxygen to get through to the lawn root system. Alleviating compaction can improve root growth, water drainage and allow better absorption of fertilizers.
Compaction can occur for many reasons especially in areas of the yard that are heavily trafficked by children or pets. New homes are often subject to compaction because of the construction equipment used to build the house. If you see puddling of water on your lawn that doesn\u2019t seem to drain this can also be a sign of soil compaction.
Aeration needs to be done at the right time, typically in the spring or fall. This is also a good time to apply additional grass seed or fertilizer.
